Jeffrey Ferguson, MD
Operational Medical Director, Henrico County Division of Fire
Dr. Jeffrey Ferguson serves as the Operational Medical Director for the Henrico County Division of Fire. He was appointed to this role after nearly a decade of service as the Division’s Deputy Medical Director. As Henrico Fire’s first full-time Operational Medical Director, Dr. Ferguson provides oversight for emergency medical dispatch protocols, prehospital treatment guidelines, and patient care standards for EMS providers.
A Professor and Resident Advisor within Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Ferguson is board-certified in both Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services. Prior to his appointment as Henrico Fire’s staff Operational Medical Director, he served in similar leadership roles with Richmond Raceway (NASCAR) and the Virginia State Police and held progressive leadership positions within the East Carolina University health system.
Dr. Ferguson is a nationally registered paramedic, guest lecturer, and published author. His professional achievements include being named NASCAR Medical Director of the Year in 2019, receiving the Virginia Governor’s Award for Outstanding Physician Contribution to EMS in 2017, and earning two regional awards from the Old Dominion Emergency Medical Services Alliance.
He is a life member of a volunteer rescue squad and serves as a contributing instructor for the Compress and Shock Foundation, reflecting his continued commitment to frontline EMS education and community service.
Dr. Ferguson earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology from Virginia Commonwealth University and completed his medical education at the University of Virginia, where he obtained both his Master’s degree in Health Evaluation Sciences and his Doctor of Medicine degree. He also completed his residency and EMS fellowship training at the University of Virginia.
